The concert film of the 1970s, capturing the final concert by The Band on Thanksgiving Day 1976. With guest appearances from the absolute best rockers of the era -- Dylan, Neil Young, Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell and so many more!
Martin Scorsese’s The Last Waltz captures the legendary farewell concert of The Band, held on Thanksgiving Day in 1976 at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom. What begins as a final performance by one of rock music’s most influential groups becomes an extraordinary celebration of an era, bringing together an unforgettable lineup of musicians who shaped the sound and spirit of American popular music. The Band—Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, and Garth Hudson—had spent years touring and recording with some of the biggest names in music, including Bob Dylan, before establishing themselves as a groundbreaking group in their own right. For their final concert, they invited an extraordinary collection of friends and collaborators to share the stage, including Dylan, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Muddy Waters, Neil Diamond, Dr. John, Ringo Starr, Ron Wood, and others. Filmed by Scorsese with an innovative combination of concert footage and intimate backstage interviews, the documentary goes beyond a conventional record of a live performance. The musicians reflect on their careers, friendships, influences, and the pressures of life on the road, while Scorsese's cameras capture the energy and spontaneity of the concert itself. The performances range from rock and blues to folk, country, soul, and gospel, revealing the remarkable musical connections that defined The Band and its generation. At the center of the film is the complicated decision to stop touring. After years of relentless performances, The Band's members wanted to step away from the physical and emotional demands of life on the road, even as they continued to make music. Their final concert therefore becomes both a celebration and a farewell—a reflection on the passage of time, the costs of fame, and the end of an important chapter in rock history. With its remarkable performances, candid interviews, and distinctive visual style, The Last Waltz stands as one of the landmark concert films of its era. More than a document of one band's final show, it is a portrait of a musical community at a pivotal moment, preserving an extraordinary gathering of artists and the enduring power of live music.
